MIX CARD · FROM CHAPTER 9

Isabella's Shower Spray

1 cup white vinegar
1 cup warm water
1 teaspoon dish soap

Vinegar and water into a spray bottle, soap last, and swirl it gently so it doesn't foam. Spray from the top down, then leave it alone for 10 to 15 minutes. Scrub gently, rinse, squeegee and dry.

For: tile, glass doors, acrylic and fiberglass tubs, chrome.

Never on: marble, travertine or other real stone, or black, gold or brass finishes. Never mix with bleach.

Hola, I'm Isabella.

I was born in Atlixco, a little town of flowers outside Puebla, Mexico. My abuela kept her house with vinegar, bicarbonato, lemons, a bar of soap and the sun, and I was on my knees next to her scrubbing tile by the time I was eight.

At twenty I came to San Antonio and started cleaning houses on my Tía Lupe's crew. Then offices at night, then my own houses, families who kept me ten, fifteen, twenty-two years. Forty years of other people's kitchens and bathrooms.

My first week on my own, a lady showed me twelve bottles under her sink and a shower still cloudy like fog. I cleaned it with the vinegar from her kitchen. She threw out half those bottles that afternoon. I've seen that happen again and again.

Now my knees tell me to slow down, and my daughter said, "Mamá, everybody asks what you use. Write it down." So I did.

On most things, no: tile, glass, most tubs, chrome, counters that aren't stone. But there are a few places it must never go, like marble and other real stone. The book tells you exactly which ones, room by room, so you never have to guess.
